Sand, Cement & Block Delivery - August 2009
Now the Foundations have been dug, I guess it's time to get some materials.
When I served my apprenticeship as a Painter & Decorator back in the late seventies and early eighties, part of the course was quantity surveying basics, so I had an idea of what we needed to put down on paper to give to the builders merchants. We prepared the list of materials we would need for the build, set out in stages for different parts of the build, we submitted this list to: 3mmm - Reseau Pro & Bricomarche.
All the quotes where pretty close, but we decided to go with 3mmm, it was slightly further away from us, but we had gotten to know the manager Xavier, who spoke perfect English, which was a huge bonus, even though Jills French was getting better by the week.
The first lorry load was ordered, which consisted of: A pallet of Cement, A couple of tonnes of Sand, and about 10 pallets of Blocks.
The order was due to be delivered in a couple of days, so we took the opportunity to make a start on making some Veggie beds to start producing some food at some point in the future.
A couple of days later and the lorry was driving onto the site, it was our first delivery and I was exited and couldn't wait to start building the Foundations and preparing for the slab to be poured :-)
The driver was someone we sort of knew, we had seen him at 3mmm a few times, and he recognised us when he got out of his truck, after exchanging pleasantries he proceeded to unload the materials, this chap was really good with the grab controls, he was so precise, everything went exactly where we wanted them. It only took about 15/20 minutes and he was done. (Video Clip Here) and (Video Clip Here)
We had previously purchased several Tarpaulins to cover materials as and when they were delivered to site, so we dug them out, and covered the Sand & Cement, taking care to put a double layer over the Cement (we didn't want that getting wet), and used a few of the block to weight everything down.
Now we had some building materials, it was time to make a start, and to get these foundations out of the ground :-)
